Solar Energy

1 Introduction to Solar Energy

Solar energy is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP).

Solar energy is an intermittent energy source, meaning that solar energy is not available at all times, and is normally supplemented by mains (grid), storage or another energy source, for example with wind power and hydropower.

1.1 Solar Advantages

  • It is a renewable source.
  • Reduced immediate energy costs.
  • Reduce the carbon footprint.
  • Add capital value to the home.
  • Feed-in tariffs from the utility companies.
  • Minimising the impact of future energy cost increases.

Solar can save money to the homeowner by a reduction of the “Immediate Load” from the grid and using “Excess Energy” to feed back into the grid at a higher value than what the homeowner buys it back from his/her utility company.
